Speech and Language Pathologist - Retired

After completing an Associate of Arts degree at Miami-Dade Junior College and a Bachelor of Science degree in Speech and Language Pathology at Florida State University, I located in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1967 where I married Lynne and began practice as a speech and language pathologist. Three years later when our daughter, Kalyn, was born we moved to Starkeville, Mississippi, to attend Mississippi State University where I received my Master of Education degree in Special Education with an emphasis on Varying Exceptionalities. Following graduation, we returned to Jacksonville to live and work for the next thirty years, twenty-seven of which I spent as the Speech and Language Pathologist at one of the two Orthopedic Centers within the Duval County Schools system. In this position I had the opportunity to provide therapy to children ranging in age from six months through six grade, many of whom were diagnosed as mentally or physically impaired, deaf/blind rubella syndrome, deaf and hard of hearing, or autistic. Needless to say, my job was never boring!

In 1998, Lynne and I retired and moved to the cool, green, magnificent mountains of Western North Carolina. Today we live in a wonderful log home on eight acres of heavily wooded land near the town of Waynesville (West of Asheville). "Playing" on our property gives me a great deal of pleasure and with building and maintaining trails, splitting firewood, and enjoying the natural beauty there is something to savor in every season. I hike, target shoot, do woodworking, and give many hours to community organizations such as the Salvation Army and Adopt-A-Highway. In addition, my time is also spent in helping to grow Vine of the Mountains Church an awesome post modern, interdenominational, worship experience that Lynne and I helped start nine years ago.

Kalyn and her husband, Clint, and our beautiful nine year old granddaughter, Alex, live just three miles away from us so we are able to share each others lives and have some incredible adventures. Never in my wildest dreams would I have ever guessed that my life would turn out the way it has. Some would call it "dumb luck"...I call it being abundantly blessed!
